| Founded in 1885 by two Leipzig factory engineers, Polyphon-Werke Aktiengesellschaft developed quickly into a world-wide renowned manufacturer of musical listening devices. Next to phonographs, records and the „Polyphon“ typewriter, automobiles start being produced in 1904 as well. After taking over Deutsche Grammophon-Gesellschaft, the company gained a dominating position in the European music business in the 1920s. |
 |
After the merger of the companies in 1932, turning into Deutsche Grammophon AG, the name Polyphon is now only used as a record label and later for a subsidiary.
With the National Socialist Party coming to power, considerable parts of the company repertoire are rated „degenerate“ and finally any traces of the company are lost in the rough-and-tumble time of World War II.
Not until 1965 does Polyphon Filmgesellschaft mbH pick up their business activity again, with the previous associate Deutsche Grammophon and two further share holders, Studio Hamburg and Gyula Trebitsch.
